001 ▲ Video

[Hello Pokéworld, this is one of those new arrivals that isn't all that good with technology and doesn't have much of a clue what he's doing. He's figured out after much trial, error, and near-drops how to record a video. Or at least where the record button is and vaguely what it does.

The video comes on to show his face and what looks like tree branches behind him--he's holding the Gear at nearly arm's length--as well as some pink fluff that is the top of the Igglybuff in his lap's head.]

Hey, this is turned on, right? If anyone's getting this, tell me so I don't have to talk to the local wildlife all evening.

I also wanna know if there's a shortcut to the next town...Cherry-something?...three days is a pain to walk, and it's stupid cold out here.

[He's sitting inside the sleeping bag and also wearing a jacket that was in his backpack, but even combined they're not really good for the weather.]

...And I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be doing with these...monsters. I read that I'm supposed to battle with them, but I took out the bird with a rock myself and the balloon doesn't do anything but sing and try to nest in my hair. So...they're pretty useless, and I hope I don't die out here because all I have is a balloon and a bird to protect me.

[There's a noise off-screen and he jerks slightly before looking around for the source.]

...The hell was that?

On distant routes, or by buying or receiving eggs from other trainers. You'd reach Cherrygrove long before any egg can hatch, even if you receive that egg immediately, but it's the fastest option.

[It's the only one fast enough to help before Violet, at any rate.

And wow, that sure is a rude Hoothoot.]

...I'd suggest assuming that any noise you hear at any time is a possible Pokémon. They are absolutely everywhere in this world, including the cities.

Ah, yes, they like to do that very much. It makes travelling through forests and caves a pleasure, especially when bats are involved.

[Luckily, he's been here long enough that he doesn't mind being the tutorial, and might even be somewhat good at it.]

You can buy eggs, yes. In fact, others who are in our situation have established a Breeding Centre for that purpose. All you need to do is acquire the egg, keep it warm for a few days or weeks, and take regular walks with it. If you are lucky, you might even obtain a Pokémon that knows dozens of attacks upon hatching.

The Breeding Centre has a Johto branch in Goldenrod, and a Kanto branch in Celadon. However, if you contact them through the Pokégear, they deliver their eggs everywhere and extremely quickly. I've never had issues with their services.

[Then again, maybe living only a few minutes away from one of the branches helps with that.]

That's right. You've obviously discovered how to send a message to every Pokégear, but by writing down the correct number you can contact a single, specific person. You can even write whole letters, if you wish.

[He adds the number for the Centre, to spare Luke the hassle of searching for it.]

Thank you. I'm glad my four years of experience here can still be helpful to newcomers. Have you any other questions about this world?

[And this tutorial doesn't even turn evil!]

Four years is the exception rather than the norm, I assure you. But yes; I can only think of a handful of people who have been here longer than I. It offered quite the opportunity to see this world change and grow.

[And break, once or twice.]

None taken. It is indeed a strange land, with its overly friendly monsters and its advanced technology. But it is also a peaceful, beautiful world, one worth exploring and discovering city by city.

They'd find quite a few kindred spirits here, then. Certain people can create new uses for the Pokégears, others improve their appliances with their Pokémon's help... All we're missing is a crew of proper airship engineers, and the airships to go with them.
